Newton on the move

It took a while but Cam Newton has a new home. The former MVP agreed to terms on a 1-year deal that is bonus laden to where Newton could earn up to 7.5 million dollars.

The deal hasn’t been finalized yet but should be done by the end of the day on Monday. Up to this point, the New England Patriots had been planning to start Jarret Stidham even if he had only four pass attempts up to this point. The backup before the deal was Bryan Hoyer who is nearing the end of his playing career.

Bill Belichick in typical Patriots fashion found a serious backup plan that can be low risk, high reward. Cam Newton could be considered as a potential replacement if Stidham doesn’t work out. There have been 2 opposite stories to Cam Newton. In 2015 he led his Carolina Panthers to the Super Bowl but got heavily criticized after they lost to the Denver Broncos.

Everything was going well for Newton up until 2018 when he suffered major injuries to his throwing shoulder and hasn’t been the same since. This past season he only played 2 games and when it came to QB rating he ranked 30th out of 39 quarterbacks while also being on an 8 game losing streak.

If everything works out the way the Patriots are hoping, and if Cam Newton can familiarize himself well with the offence he could prove to be very valuable. I feel this is a great fit with Julian Edelman, James White and the rest of the Patriots offence.

Worse case he will watch from the sidelines as another rookie QB will attempt to keep this New England team in playoff contention. Before the deal, everyone thought the Patriots would have no chance at even making the playoffs but this deal again if it works out puts them right back in the Super Bowl discussion.

We will have more official news as it comes out so stay tuned and keep checking us out for more sports news and stories.
